SpikeSAline always hungry but bony!

Post by Snellis » 23 Sep 2009, 17:50

Spike is 13 weeks now and has put on 3kg since we had him at 9 weeks. This seems an awful lot! Never seen a dog polish off food so fast in my life. Always hungry (or greedy!!) and he is very skinny - ribs and bottom v thin. Someone in street commented and I felt like a bad mum!!!! :(
any thoughts on recommended weights for doods?
Thank you
Kate

That weight sounds quite similar to Lulu who's a f1b (medium). Thing is we don't get comments as she looks quite big with all her fur but underneath she is like a skinny black rat.  And I know her weight is similar to the other Snuggles puppies so assume all is ok.

Now I warn you its not pretty.

Bless her ! - she's poodly like Teddy, when he's wet I could swear there's some whippet in there !!
I don't think you need to worry too much about Spike, as long as he's up to date with worming, it probably just means he's a growing lad with a labrador appetite.

Hes a growing boy and that is why he is so hungry.
Keep him on 4 meals a day and give him one last thing at night, about 30 mins before your bedtime.
If you think he is still hungry add a little more to each serving.
If it doesnt work out for the better, then just take a step back again.
I'm sure he's fine :D

He sounds OK to me , but I'll ask the obvious question - is his worming up to schedule?

When I got Poppy I was anal enough to keep a record of her weight - she has always been small, but as a guideline this was how she went (some of the early ones may be a bit wrong as I had to convert them  ) ..

Your Spike looks like our Dylan and Dylan is just the same with his food - blink and you miss him eat it and he would eat more. I give about 150g per meal, 3 meals a day and this adds up to the instructions on the food bag. Dylan's ribs can be seen and he goes in at the waist. I reckon Spike is just fine, I think you can see the Lab in him which probably accounts for his appetite!

Only giving spike 60g per meal three times a day - as that's what it says on the packet for his weight...hmmm.

Thanks for weight chart that was really reassuring! Spike at 9kg at 13 weeks seems right accoring to yr chart!

Don't forget though, that Poppy is a small standard doodle, and a girl (obviously! ), so although Spike doesn't sound dreadfully small, it might be that he could carry a little more weight without it being too much. My chart does show that his weight gain isn't extraordinary though.

Remember too, that the amounts on the food bags are a guideline only - some dogs will be big and need more, and some will be small and need less - you could try him with a little more, but cut it back again if it upsets his tum.
