How many of our Doodles are service dogs?

Reading Caz's post on Asha made me think as to how many of the UKLA Doodles are Service Dogs and what are their owner's medical needs that they help with? They don't need to be officially registered, just have specific roles.

I apologise in advance if I have got the medical bits wrong Do post to correct me, and add further details. It will be a fascinating demonstration to show people how brilliant our Doodles are.

I worked out

Caz - has Asha - age 1 year, 2 months - mobility (and mental health?) problems - Asha helps with hanging out washing, picks things up, uses licks to wipe tears away on bad days, walks slowly at my pace, rests her head in my lap to cheer me up, barking alert when I have fallen over.

Tillytubbie - has Tilly - 3 years, 9 months, mobility problems - Tilly can pick almost anything up for me, retrieve my medication, shoes, crutches, bag etc. She opens/closes doors, braces herself for me to lean on her, can pull my socks/trousers/coat off and bark for help.

Tynkerbelluk - has Archie - 1 year, 2 months - MS and back problems - Archie can unload my washing machine and pick things up, can take off socks and bring my slippers.

Liz - has Lola - 1 year? - Diabetes - Lola can alert when my blood sugar is low.

Lissy - Izzy - 7 months - helping my autistic children communicate

Jodie - Buddy - 9 months? - mobility issues - learning to take my washing from my 'clothes dump' pile in my room into the bathroom and drop them in the washing bin, take of socks/trousers/pull off jumper sleeves, learning to fetch specific things, like medicine or purse.

Inkamum - Inka - 2 years 6 months? - Fatigue problems? - to start training, if accepted, to support me, fetch things, pull up bed clothes etc.

PAT - Pets as Therapy dogs - officially registered
Bid - Poppy - 3 years old - visits old folks homes
MadaboutDoodles - Cass - 4 years old? - visits schools?
Paul - Lola - 4 years old?) - visits Caroline House, Colman Hospital - patients with mental impairment and neurological damage.
Rhonk - Bonzo - 2 years, 8 months - visits school for learning disabled children

Do add more of our 'Special' Doodles to this list.

Bruno's obviously not an assistance dog as he's nuts but hopefully when he calms down a bit I'd love him to be a PAT dog and work with children with communication difficulties.

I'll be waiting to see more special doods and their amazing talents.

Lola is a hypo-alert puppy in training. Hopefully she will eventually alert to low and high sugar, in the day or night. At the moment she is at the beginning of training.

Socially - she has to learn to be calm and ignore people/other dogs/children when out in public, to walk by my side in an orderly manner, sit at the roadside, not beg for food, not jump up if anyone approaches her without asking. She does virtually all this now, except sometimes she does jump up if someone looks at her.

Diabetes-wise she is at the very beginning, but she has alerted, several times to high blood sugar in the night and recently to low blood sugar, most recently 3 times in one night. That definitely saved me from an unconscious episode.

She doesn't seem to 'get it' during the day yet though!

Asha has also learned to load/unload the washing machine, and to undress me and to counter balance my balance,

With the Dog AID there are three stages to go through and you end up with certified card(like a dog /owner passport) only when you get this can you rights that allow you to call your Dog a Service Dog, Tomorrow I am going for our first assessment for level one so fingers crossed.

1st level are only able to go into shops and onto public transport where normal pet dogs are allowed, e.g. pet shops, banks and building societies, local buses etc. However, if asked to remove their dog they must comply with this instruction to go though

2nd At this level dogs are trained to ignore food in a variety of situations including those that would be an extreme temptation to the dog. They are taught more advanced control exercises and undergo an advanced socialisation programme.

Dogs at this level are still only able to go into shops and onto public transport where normal pet dogs would be allowed.


3rd level Clients will be allowed to take their dog into public places where Assistance dogs are allowed only when with their trainer.
The owner will need to be able to demonstrate consideration for their dog and excellent handling skills. Clients and dogs that pass this test will be given full Assistance Dog status. They will be required to have an annual re-assessment to ensure that the high standard is maintained.
The final assessment will be carried out by an independent assessor from Dog AID i.e. a trainer qualified as an assessor but not the trainer who has worked with the client.

You also have to prove that your dog is insured, vaccinated, and has regular health checks, through it's working life, there are continual assessments as well to insure that the dog/owner are still safe and ok to continue being a service dog.

I cant wait to be able to go shopping and to collect my daughter from school with Asha being with me. I hardly go shopping now, I am not allowed to go into my daughters school so it really will make me a better mum who can be there for her kids.

Megan is a family pet but my youngest Ryan is Autistic and we call him 'the dog whisperer'. He loves all animals and can do anything with them. Its almost like the animal can sense his disability. Megan as i said is a family member but she does so much for ryan without even realizing it. We love her and she completes our family (but the cat has moved out!!! )

By the way HAPPY BIRTHDAY Lola Also Buffy's ID card is just wonderful

But Mrs Admin, Cass has a complaint she would like to address to you now being a lady she is a bit sensitive about her age ( aren't we all ) she is actually 3 and a half and yes she can visit schools and retirement homes, hospitals etc
She forgives you really and cannot wait to go back and visit you and your adorable gang next time, her and Sadie send you big licks and best wishes for Christmas. Give the lovely Jack and Becky big hugs from us

I too think this is a lovely thread, and am so in awe of all these wonderful doodles and owners

I offer this tongue-in-cheek ............................. Molly and Saffie are pretend-assistance-dogs I do some vol work for our local Day Care Centre and I often transport older-than-me folks to the centre, and often will have Molly and Saffie in the boot (estate car, not closed in ) and the follks love to just have them there, and say hello through the dog guard and chat about them, and about dogs they have owned. I also help out at the Centre as well as do transport, and have been asked to take the girls in, but have said no.........they might behave themselves, but I think they might not!!!! But everyone loves to hear of their latest exploits!!!! So I do think that Molly and Saffie are helping in their own unique way

Buffy doesn't much like the picture on her ID card (although it's much better than mine on my Driver's Licence!). Here she is looking much prettier

I have a daughter with autism and Pebbles has always been wonderful with her, never shied away from her sometimes rough treatment - she finds it hard to stroke her gently. I have applied for her to be a PAT dog. Some of the dogs on this site are amazing in what they do.
