Been poorly and now we are a Doodles 'N' Poodles reject :(

Post by mandilaing » 07 Jul 2011, 14:51

Hello everyone, long time no speak.

It has been a very strange year - as some of you may remember, last summer we went to Minneapolis for several months for my job. We couldn't leave Morello behind, so we took her with us! The journey over was stressful for all concerned, mostly due to the stifling heat when we got to MSP and the length of time it took the airline to get her off the plane and over to us so we could water her and cool her down. But once that trauma was over we had a splendid time in the States. She went up to Lake Superior, she paddled in the Minnehaha Creek and met lots of new friends at various dog parks around the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St Paul).

We got back to the UK in October and headed off to Cornwall for a week's holiday. While we were there we tried to hook up with Kate W and Rufus, but unfortunately it was at this time that Kate had her fall and so we were unable to meet. While we were in Cornwall I felt increasingly ill and visited the doctor on our return to Hampshire.

To cut a very long story short, at the end of November I was diagnosed with a form of colo-rectal cancer. Being a cancer survivor of 23 years (cervical cancer in 1987) I was unable to have radiotherapy and so on 20th December I underwent a 6 hour operation to cut the tumour out and create a TRAM flap (where they take skin, muscle and blood supply) from my stomach to fill the void they had created removing the tumour and surrounding tissue. Two very unpleasant days in ICU followed, then back up to the ward for the most miserable Christmas I've ever endured - and I love Christmas so it was doubly miserable. Being a complete coward it was several days before I could even look at the wound, which is nearly 2 ft long and was held together with 150 staples! Worse still, when they removed the staples the wound dehised (opened up) meaning I could actually see inside my stomach!! Not good.

But, on 30th December my wonderful surgeon - big round of applause please for Miss Sarah Burton at Frimley Park Hospital - told me that pathology had confirmed clear margins on the tissue and I was officially clear of cancer. I went home on 1st January and started my recuperation. Several weeks working with the Tissue Viablility Nurses saw the majority of the wound close and in February we had the great news that the oncologist did not think I would need to have any chemotherapy - Yay!!

On 20th June - six months to the day after the operation, the last part of the wound finally closed and I am now back to work almost full time, although it does tire me out. I meet with Miss Burton once every three months and will have a CT scan twice a year to check for reoccurence or spreading of the cancer. We had the first scan last month and it was, thankfully, clear.

Through all this, my husband has been a rock and has done everything for me, including cooking (he can now do a wonderful roast dinner) washing, ironing etc. He has also walked Morello twice a day, come rain or shine. Work have been fantastic, sending care packages and messages of support from all over the world and friends from far and wide have visited and helped out where they can.

And Morello....she realised straight away that Mummy wasn't well and rather than leaping all over me as she normally would do, instead climbed up on to the bed, or sofa, cuddled in tight and fell asleep. Sometimes laying with me all day. What a love.

So - to the second part of the title of this post - I read that Kate W now posted on Doodles 'N' Poodles and in an effort to catch up with her, as we are hoping to head back to Cornwall soon and would love to try again to walk with her and Rufus, thought we would join that forum. So, I logged on to the site and attempted to join. We got an acknowledgement and advice that we would have to be approved by the site administrator. Fair enough.

10 days later we had still not heard anything and so we attempted to join again. Once again we got the acknowledgement. Two days later we were rejected!! I replied to the email asking why, as to my knowledge we have never behaved in a manner on this website (the only other frum we belong to) in a way that would indicate we were 'undesirables'. To date (a week later) we have had no response.

Anyone here have any idea why we might have been rejected? I feel quite hurt :?

I guess I'll be the first then ...to say...welcome back ..I remember Morello from last year and that you were off the USA....and I think reading your wonderful tales of the US and then your health issues puts my own health problems way down the list ..........I too know exactly where you are coming from in regards to consultants and I wish to also say three cheers for an assortment of them working between Norwich, Cambridge and the London Hospitals who have steered and guided me over the last 8 years or so. I too have a rock (called John) whom I couldn't have survived without and helped me over some the hurdles put in front of me and just like Morello my boy Vince has always been his usual loving doodle self.

I am so glad to read that you are now on the right side of your treatment and hope that all your future scans etc will be the good news ones. As regards to Kate W...I miss her and her wonderful input to this forum but I haven't tried to join Doodles and Poodles so am unsure what has happened with your sign on ....I'm sure someone will be along shortly to suggest something or another.....best wishes and doodle hugs to Morello ......Rae and Vince :)

Wow, what a lot has happened to you, so glad that you are ok now and i had no idea you could have cancer removed without having to have chemo... what a terrible time, you deserve some wonderfulness and I couldn't even begin to guess why the other site won't let you in, but suspect it might just be you have a similar name maybe, to a trouble-maker?

But you are SO welcome here, hello!

Hi Mandi,
I don't really have any wise words of wisdom about other forums but what I can say is that I am so glad that 2011 is getting better and better for you and your family. I'm not one for long posts but please continue to look after yourself and allow those around you to care for you too,

Regards and Best Wishes

Hi Mandi

Sorry youve not been well.

Im a Mod on Doodles N poodles and you most defintaley havent been rejected on purpose. Its a popular site, but unfortunately due to that we also get a lot of "spam" users so we reject a lot that look like spam because otherwise we end up getting a load of "viagra" type posts

So apologies about that...if you pm me your username on here, Ill make sure you Get In 8)

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. I have been reading the forum regularly but for a long time had no energy or inclination to contribute. Going back to work, whilst tiring, has been really good for me because it has made me feel that normality is returning and with it the desire to engage in life, rather than just view it. One of the things I missed the most was walking Morello. It was great to see her and Iain (my husband) coming back from an intrepid expedition to the ranges or through the woods, but it is even better to take her for an amble round the park myself :D

It's good to be back!

Goodness, what trauma you have been through. Firstly congratulations on you getting the all clear and secondly that you have come through the recovery period which sounds like it was a real trial.

Your hubbie deserves a big clap for being your rock at this time.

Your post brought back some vivid memories of an emergency caesar some 16 years ago when my wound split open when they removed the stitches. What I saw will stay with me for ever too!!

Wishing you a continued good recovery.

Ye Gods & little fishes Mandi

I think you (and Hubbie) deserve a Survivor of the Year medal for getting through all that and still being sane out the other side  :P

Aren't Doodles amazing! So glad you were able to sort out all Morello's travels and that she was there for you all the way through.

Having such a positive attitude (even when faced with your Insides being Outsides the Insides  ) will contribute to your continued good health and staying clear of the cancer I'm sure.

I'm sure that Frosty will sort out D N P for you so do pop over again. That's the difference with a moderated forum, which doesn't happen so much until damage is done on here, sometimes wires get crossed. Lots of us are complete tarts and flirt back and forth around the forums. Probably why not much housework gets done in my house

(Just to make you smile - in a wry sort of way  )

Hi Mandi and welcome back. Although we only joined the forum last September I do remember some posts about you going over to the USA We just wanted to send you very positive thoughts as my husband Ron had colorectal cancer and we can empathise with the long op., horrendous scar (and staples) which also didn't heal at the bottom. They ended up dripping liquid nitrogen on to it to burn out the gunge. He was operated on just as the new Millenium came in.(they had to remove a large amount of colon). Anyway that year just disappeared somehow due to 8 mths chemotherapy via hickman line, back and forth for hosp visits for scans etc. We just wanted to say that, yes, it is a long slow, tiring road to recovery and do take it very easy but you WILL get there and be more confident as each of those scans come back clear, especially the 5 year one. We wish you well and look forward to your postings again. Take care, and take care of hubby too as only people like me know what he has also been going through. As regards the other forum it sounds as if that has all been sorted out for you. Chris x
