BIG Day for Florrie tomorrow - she's going to the groomers

Post by Florrie! » 16 Sep 2011, 08:47

Hiya,
As you probably know where I've had so many issues with Florrie, grooming is her biggest one. She hates being brushed, the only place she doesn't mind being brushed is her back. I've worked with her on desensitisation which has helped alot but she's still not great being groomed. Anyway, she's looking incredibly scruffy and where she has skin problems, I'm bathing her weekly but have to leave her to dry naturally and haven't been managing to do too much brushing as she hates it and gets incredibly stressed.

Someone I used to work with recommended a friend of hers. She doesn't have a grooming business yet but is trying to establish herself. She has qualifications in grooming and also in canine behaviour specialising in anxiety and fear. I have discussed Florrie with her at length and she feels she will be able to handle her and maybe even groom her. She said to take Florrie's kong, her ball, her lead, and her blanket so that if she is stressed then she will give her a break and play with her, let her rest whatever she feels Florrie needs. I've said to her that I'm not too bothered about how far she manages to get with Florrie and if she only manages to bath her then its a step in the right direction for Florrie.

We are sending Sophie with Florrie and the groomer is going to do Sophie first so Florrie can watch and see what it's all about and then she will attempt to do Florrie. The groomer also said she will see how Florrie goes and if we feel she needs it, she will set up a program for us to do at home and visit the groomer regularly to get her used to it all working step by step.

I don't know what Florrie's going to come home looking like so your guess is as good as mine!

Lets hope she does well and isn't too stressed. I will post pics on here tomorrow after she's been.

Your groomer sounds fantastic. Even if all Florrie does is watch Sophie it will be a step in the right direction. Good luck

Good Luck! Lottie is also difficult to brush, she seems to want to do it herself and grabs the brush all the time. She is, however, impecably behaved at the groomers, so I am sure Florrie will be fine in such good hands.

SHe sounds great - hope it went well and that Florrie was relaxed about it.

Our groomer invited Beamish along just to stand on the table and listen to the drier, then his next visit was just for a wash and dry. She says it pays off in the end if she spends a few minutes with them as pups :D . SHe must have trained at the same place as yours!

Well .....................

Florrie got groomed :D :D :D :D

We went yesterday and as soon as they got there they both sniffed round the garden (she grooms in a summer house at the end of her garden). Sophie was straight in there saying hello, tail wagging, exploring everywhere, happy as anything as usual. Florrie didn't approach the groomer to say hello for 20 mins so we just talked about how we wanted the girls to be groomed and Florrie's behaviour. As soon as Florrie relaxed a little the groomer tried to coax her into the summer house, I had to go in too in the end and she soon followed. The groomer put a lead on Florrie and then we left her to it.

She rang me 3 hours later saying that they were ready and that she'd stopped doing Florrie as she was getting agitated and stressed. She didn't manage to bath Florrie as she was having none of it, she did however manage to brush and cut her hair all over. Her front legs are only 3/4 done as she was getting really stressed so the groomer didn't want to turn a good experience into a negative one. She said that Florrie was good, but she was quite stressed, so she gave her small breaks letting her run around in the garden and gave her, her kong (which she wasn't interested in) in between.

Florrie looks so much better now and I think the groomer has done a really good job with her, and not just on her hair cut! Florrie was quiet yesterday when we got her home at 3pm and all she did was sleep the rest of the day and was a little reluctant to eat her dinner, however we left her to it and she soon settled down and became happier. She was by no means happy but she didn't react in the same ways that she has in the past to being groomed and today she's fine and back to her usual mischievious self! We're going to set up a program for her so she can go to the groomers every 6-8 weeks just for a wash, or a trim, or a brush or whatever, just getting her to trust the groomer and relax a little.

I'm so pleased with how well she's done and how far she's come with her anxiety issues. I've worked so hard with her and it still continues to be a struggle but we're getting there gradually.

Here's Florrie before .............................

So glad it was a success! Most dogs are tired after a trip to the groomers, and for Florrie it wil have been extra tiring with all that worrying she had to do, so I'm not surprised she slept a lot! It must be a big relief knowing she can go to the groomers from time to time as she needs.
