Hello all,

We pickup our new doodle (Woody) this weekend and would like to query you all about taking him outside for potty training. As he is only 8 weeks and had a single jab, we’ve been advised he can’t go outside yet. As there are foxes and cats in the area who often walk through our garden, I thought this was a sensible idea and planned to keep him in the house until the second jab.
However, everything I’m reading about potty training suggests we take him outside when he needs to go. His area will be at the end of the garden where the kids don’t go, so he’ll need to walk the length of the garden.

Can he go outside in this limited area without other dogs, or should we initiall ‘house train’ him and change his behaviour later.

In about three months, due to work commitments, we need him to manage for a few hours on his own in the house whilst we’re out during school term time.

Thank you for the advice!

Ian

I wouldn't over worry about letting him out into your garden....
We are situated in a fairly rural location but have always allowed our pups into the garden.
Let him out straight away after waking....then every 20/30 minutes throughout he day.
If you choose to do a middle of the night toilet session just lift him out (without speaking to him)....if he performs give him a little praise & reward and pop him back to bed
Puppies are like toddlers...some are quicker than others at toilet training.
It can take up to 16 weeks for a pup to physically be able to control their bladder.
Good luck! :)

Hello :D I agree with Linny, definitely let him use the garden. If you are vigilant you will spot the signs and will be able to take him outside. Pups need lots of trips out to wee: when they wake, after playing, after food and drink. You could even note down times in a book- that way you can spot a pattern. We took Dude out during the night ( 3am) for a couple of months. It seems like a faff but it means no accidents at night. We didn't crate so it was worthwhile. Good luck.
