Technical Stuff - blog

You can use this area for idle or not so idle chat that is not related to Labradoodles as long as you keep it free of flame wars and anything obscene.

Post by Doodle Dee » 26 Feb 2014, 12:07

Hey can anyone help with free blogs. I want to do one but am finding it so difficult. I had wordpress but can't change the front page - then another one that I had to pay for (it is just for fun) but didn't know until I had set it up (had one month free)

I had one a few years ago and did it lovely but can't remember where I got it from? I have tried a search but........

Thanks

Can't change the front page? What is it you want to do? I have a Wordpress blog...

Usually the front page is there as the blog so any comments you make on it will disappear down the page as you add new ones and no post will stay there for long.

You also get 'pages which will stay the same.

There are hundreds of different styles you can get of blog on Wordpress and all are slightly different, so each one would need different advice.

What is it you actually want to do? If you look at at the templates for each blog they will tell you if you can change the colours of the site.

You are able to put photos on every single one.

This is mine:

If you tell me more specifically what you want to do I may be able to help.

your site is lovely and it is all about you! When I go into my site - it has a church on it or a lovely building:

Ok, had a look - you want to change the church picture for another.

This can be technically quite difficult - because the banner or header is a certain pixel width. If you go into your workings and go to 'appearance' and click on that, it should take you to a menu with 'header' in it.

It will tell you there how many pixels wide your picture must be to fill the slot currently held by the church.

I made my header on Photoshop. But it could be a section of a larger photo - you need to find a photo which could be cut widthways and still have a part of a labradoodle (yours!) on it...

Actually, you can now(I see in my instructions0 go to 'cstoise' under 'appearance' and choose header and do it that way.

Have a photo you want to use - you can try lots, it takes time but eventually you'll find something that works.

Have the photo on your desktop or in a file, and click 'choose file'. A window pane will come up with options to choose from - I have a mac so cant help you with how this would appear on PC, but you choose the name of your photo and then choose upload and it will upload.

The page will them give you options to move the picture around in the slot to where it looks best. The picture will be bigger than the slot. So you decide which bit you want to be showing.

Then choose 'ok' or whatever and it will give you a preview of how it will look. If you don't like that - do it all again with a different picture or change the bit of the picture showing that you are using already.

Hopefully you aren't going to give up on Wordpress... I think it's one of the best, if not THE best platform out there. I've used the self-hosted version for several years at http://www.nanson.org/wordpress, and have had no issues of significance. I suspect the biggest challenge you may have with the wordpress.com system is a limit on what themes, or skins, you can use to design the site. If you haven't spent some time poking around in the configuration area and experimenting with available free themes, I recommend you do so... you should be able to preview them without committing to them. You'll find that they can present your content in entirely different ways and each is tailored for a different prime purpose. In other words, they don't all simply change the font and move the front page photo around!

Having said that, I'm not entirely sure how much selection wordpress.com will offer, but it's probably worth investigating if you haven't already.

A bonus to this... assuming wordpress.com works in a similar way to the self-hosted version... you can dump photobucket and simply link to images in your media gallery. :D

Doodle Dee,

Well, something must have worked because there is now a beautiful picture of Lulu and no sign of a church!! Looking forward to following your blog... (if it's going to be public or whatever... I don't really understand these things! )

Woohoo, she looks wonderful!

You can also Google to find out how to do things - and Wordpress itself has very good help pages.
