I'm so sorry I missed your previous post... I've had a call like this from the vet. It's indescribable. Suffice to say, I know how you felt. Take comfort from the knowledge that you have done the best thing you could for your beloved lad. Hard to take, I know, but it's true. It's such a shock, and there's no time to come to terms with what you have to do... Eventually, you'll be able to remember all the best times you had with your boy - for the time being, you just have to live with the grief. I always say that the grief you feel is a measure of the love you had for your little companion. Ted will miss him too, so helping him will help you cope... My thoughts are with you tonight.

Thanks everyone for all you kind words.
The last couple of days have been a bit of a blur.
Its so quiet here, Ted and Mabel have hardly made a sound. Yesterday Ted slept in Patches bed, which was a sight as he is about Three imes bigger than Patch was.
We spent yesterday going through " The if onlys" but (Mainly thanks to our sons girlfriend ) we have come to the conclusion we did the best we could fo him. He only came to us fo an hour because our sons friend had found him living rough in a field and after contacting Police, dog warden etc were advised to get him to a dogs home Our son brough him to our house because they were upset.
Needless to say an hour turned into ten years. No one ever came forward to claim him .(Although after about a month they would of had a fight on their hands!!)
We will miss him and his little quirky ways.
All good things come to an end.
