Please help us cope:((

Post by Nicky » 20 Dec 2013, 18:28

I have some devastating news about Dexter, his limping was caused by a bone sarcoma and its more than likely spread:(( His lungs look clear but its an aggressive type. He is going in on Tuesday as we made the hard decision to amputate the leg with with the tumour to relive the pain and buy him some time. Im not putting him through chemo its just not fair.

The vets think I have chose the right option for him I hope I have. The thought of losing him is too hard to bard to bear as we love him sooo much.

Any coping tips as this is such a shock

Oh how devastating for you :( :( . One of the dogs that Daisy's breeder bred had the same thing - it was the dog she'd given to her Mum - Blue. He had a leg amputated and everyone was much more concerned about it that he was! Blue coped perfectly without the leg - it healed quickly and it was exactly as you say - it gave him more time, without pain.

The thing with dogs is they don't look to the future - they only live in the here and now. They don't think "I've got cancer" with all that entails. He will just be thinking "My leg hurts", and after Tuesday he will have forgotten his leg hurt and get on with learning to run on three legs.

Sending you big hugs, and hoping you can enjoy the extra time you are giving Dexter - take a leaf out of his book if you can, and enjoy the here and now :D

Thank you Bid your right, its how we will cope without him. Personally do you think we are doing the right thing not having chemo as well I have read it could potentially give him 1-2 years
extra but its weighing if its worth it for him....x

Oh, Nicky, this is just terrible.

I agree with Bid though - he won't know, and will just accept whatever you decide.

I have heard that chemo is well tolerated by dogs. (Edit to say that i don't know about aggressive cancer though, and I do know bone cancer is hard to treat as my uncle had it.)

But only you know your circumstances and his and whether he will cope.

So, so sorry. Wishing him a VERY long time on his 3 legs! XX

Nicky,

How very difficult for you. My only 'advice' really is that there are no right and wrong decisions here .... whatever you decide to do will be out of love for your doodle so can only be correct.

Thinking of you all ....

It's a hard decision to make - I would talk to your vet - ask him if he has administerd chemo and how the dogs take it. They don't worry like we do, and won't anticipate the side effects, if there are any. Just remember that there is no right or wrong decision - what you think is best for Dexter is all there is to it.

Here are a couple of links that you might like to look at too ....

I am so sorry about Dexter, all I can say is go with your feelings. If Dexter isn't in pain he can live with three legs.

Dogs look awful when they are seriously sick. i know all the signs from my last dog, who had carcinoma in the nose (he was 14) and it took a couple of procedures to find out what the problem was.

I know this forum will support you whatever your decision, keep us updated.

I am so so sorry to hear your news. I am sure whatever you decide will be the best for Dexter. You know him best. All I would say is if you are not sure what to do, consider a second opinion with another vet or specialist. At least then you can be sure that you have explored all options.

Good luck to Dexter on Tuesday. There is a lab on the field who has lost a leg and often outruns Poppy. :D They just get on with it and don't experience the worry like we do.

I am so sorry to hear your news. Others will have different view on chemo and steroids. My beloved McKenzie had lymphoma and we went down the steroids and chemo route. It was tough and I felt he suffered too much for very little benefit. Having said that, it wouldn't stop me trying again - some dogs do really well - it was too much for my mac but you have to try and also know when to say enough. Our prayers are with you x
