Eye issues

Hi all

Our Teddy is 13 weeks and a fluff ball. I trim around his eyes because his hair seems to grow towards his eyes, but recently one of his eyes is more gunky than the other and always has sleep in it.

It's not weeping and he doesn't seem bothered (i.e not rubbing it) but I was cleaning his eyes this morning and the gunk was a little bit stringy.

I've tried to get an appointment at 2 vets but they are fully booked until Thursday.

In the mean time has anyone got any advice on what to do to try and improve it?

And can you buy over the counter drops for dogs or do they have to come from the vet?

I believe you can use optrex. I know I have on Lulu in the past

Yes I have used optrex on Harley when he has gunky eyes, after I took him to the vets and they charged me over £20 for drops, then told me after I paid for them, that you can use human eye drops, I could have killed him.

I keep a bottle in the fridge now.

Thank for the advice I've bought optrex infected eye drops, hopefully it clears up.

Optex infected eye drops are the right ones to use.
I use them on my dogs.....much cheaper than exactly the same thing from the vet. + the added consult charge.

Hello, our 17 week old Rupert has a similar coat to Teddy and had a gunky eye due to curls nearby. That improved once his face was trimmed and then our big girl Tilly had a closed sticky eye the next day

In the past I've been told by experienced dog owner friends to bathe the eye with warm, salted water and, as another option, to use a tiny smear of Golden Eye ointment (human treatment from chemist) as it's easier to put in the corner of the eye than drops!! Have to say it worked a treat and her eye was back to normal next day.

Re the Golden eye ointment....in the old days(and I speak as a genuine oldie ) we all used Golden eye on our dogs but past posts have indicated that this product has been modified and is no longer suitable or safe to use for dogs.

This from another Golden Oldie,at the first sign of gungy eyes I always bathe them with cold tea.
