Been going through the various available policies this morning even though we don't have the puppy yet I like to be prepared! Found it a bit of a nightmare working out what the various policy wordings actually mean (as opposed to what they sound like they mean!). Found this comparator quite useful - sorry if it's been posted before: http://www.defaqto.com/products/insuran ... mpare/dogsSo far AXA, Halifax, HSBC and Petplan come up well although Petplan is really expensive! Hope that's useful for others.

Bit of a warning. If you have a new puppy, and are not going to continue with Pet Plan cover that comes with them. Take out your insurances as soon as you have the dog from day one. I didn't and in the intervening two weeks she need her ears checking and then as it was a condition inplace before new insurance kicked in, my later claim was rejected. You may need to advise PET plan that you aren't using their insurance, as your new company may not cover you til it has run out. If you use the link, do include the caravan club one in your search. http://www.defaqto.com/products/insuran ... mpare/dogs They do home and abroad included, and include lots of other stuff. And are reasonable. Its a minefield though. Which is best, max claim per year, or max claim per illness. Suppose if you have a longstanding condition, per ill ness is not good. regards

Just like to say that we only insured our previous Doodle Ralph, with More Than ,at the age of 9 almost 10 and the premiums were £22 per month. Within the first twelve months of the insurance, Ralph suffered a twisted stomach. We rushed him to the vets very late on a Saturday evening, he underwent a a major operation (3hrs) which he wasn't expected to survive, but he did and recovered well. Although the 3hrs on the operating table did damage to his back, which eventually played a part in his demise. Having said all that with a tear in my eye, I just want to say that More Than were fantastic. They kept in contact, advised and even sent a get well letter, no problems with the vets bills (around £1200) and a sorry youve lost Ralph letter when he went to doggy heaven, bless him.

We've just been quoted £19 with petplan but he's said that that price is life cover so includes cover for illnesses on an ongoing situation, has an excess of £70 , is that good or what?

It's at the top end, but I think you get what you pay for. Is there a stipulation about how much they pay out per condition? You need to avoid this, since if your dog had an ongoing illness, then they would stop paying out after a while. I think Petplan doesn't do this, I think they are pretty comprehensive. You'd be paying what I pay M&S, and they are great. Both my claims have been quickly sorted, no questions asked. Same as our excess too. Poor Ralph, Vincento.

It might help to read through this discussion on insurance we all had a while ago. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10375&start=0I ended up with Pinnacle Insurance for Becky and, when Jack's M & S insurance came up for renewal and the premium had gone through the roof despite no claims, I changed him over too. I also get a free month on each dog as I have more than one policy, and they are covered per year, rather than per illness. There are lots of useful points to consider listed here too but good luck. It will do you head in, and then I bet they still find a way to wiggle out of it all if you claim . For all new puppy owners - Insurance must be top of your 'To Do' list as it is vital to have it nowadays, not just for illness but in case your Doodle causes an accident.
