Quoted £7.80 a month for lifetime cover, sounds a bit too good to be true to me? John Lewis' lowest cover was quoted to me at £15 and their midrange at £20 as a comparison..

Just my opinion but I don't think you can beat Pet Plan.My 10 month old pup has had two life threatening illnesses,Pet Plan could not have dealt with the claims better.

I am with you there! also Petplan don't put up the premium when you make a claim. Daisy averages £300 a month at the vets, and Petplan pay up promptly.

Please look into it carefully. Sometimes cheap isn't better when my other dog was 8 I couldn't ensure with pet plan anymore. Not sure why. I changed to something another which I can't remember. Lulu is now with pet plan and I will stay there it costs me £35 which is due to my post code if. Apparently my vets charge more where I live. Anyway I tryst pet plan and pay the money. When I looked at the one I used to be with they were not much different. Good luck

Thanks for your replies! Harvey is currently on pet plans free 4 weeks and they just messaged about an additional month free. As long as I continue with them after the free insurance would anything found within this time period be covered for life?

I rang up petplan and have decided to continue with them. They said anything is covered immediately and will roll on as long as I continue my insurance without any breaks. It will cost me £26 a month which I feel like is very high but their policy seems better than most and everyone here seems to be happy with them. I think as mentioned above my premium may be higher due to my postcode...I have decided though that after the vulnerable first couple of years I am unlikely to continue insurance and will instead set the money aside each month as I feel for a perfectly healthy dog the premium is a bit ridiculous. Right now as he is a puppy I want to be safe but the likelihood I feel after a certain period of time of him developing something which warrants what the insurance would cost me over his lifetime is slim to none, also hopefully by that time I will be in a position where in case of an emergency I will be able to pay vet fees, right now if something goes terribly wrong (fingers crossed it won't) I will struggle without insurance. I'm glad I found this forum as it gives great advice and help. I will also read the T&Cs more carefully of other alternatives which are cheaper than petplan in the meanwhile as I have the 14 day cooling off period, I chose petplan to be safe but I honestly feel as though the premium is ridiculously high.

The thing is, in our case, we had no idea how high vets bills could be when something does go wrong. And it can do, out of the blue! I personally think it's essential to have insurance, especially after the experience we had with Dude, just before he was a year old.
He had a massive auto immune reaction( totally cured, thank goodness) and had to go to the specialist vets hospital in Bristol. The final bill was for over £2,000. At that point we were insured for £1,000! Needless to say we couldn't say no to the treatment. You can't underestimate how costly vet bills can be!
I will get back to you with how much insurance we pay now. I think it's money well spent.

Thanks for your reply, I know what you mean! I'm also playing with the idea of finding a better deal because this insurance is costing me £300 a year which over the course of Harvey's life (hopefully long) will add up to quite a lot. I do want to make sure I can afford vet treatments but it is just a massive expense, there is no other company that has quoted me nearly as much as pet plan has but based on the opinions on this forum I went with petplan to be safe. It's a bit ridiculous when I think that my car insurance when I was 20 years old is less than my pet insurance...

Hi again, we are with More Than. They have been very helpful and very prompt in paying out. I would certainly recommend them. We now have cover for £12,000 a year and we pay just under £15 a month.
I hope the early days with the pup are going well. Anny.

Thing is, with a car, you can junk it and buy another....

But it is also way more likely to/able to kill or seriously harm you and other people! Yes, for me personally I would rather lose my car than my dog but in the eyes of an insurer...

Thanks! I'll look into them. I'm paying £26 for £4000 a year...Things are going relatively well, it is tiring though luckily he sleeps most of the day!

My lovely daughter parked my relatively new car in a car park that got flooded... the insurers wrote it off without even looking at it (fortunate, as she'd also managed to make a rather nasty mess of a door panel... ) I was just pointing out the difference between cars and dogs

I'm glad to hear that he's settling in well - I hope he sleeps well at night too! :D

All I can say is how good More Than have been in our case. No hassle, very pleasant helpful people on the phone, and no quibbles. We have claimed twice, and both times they were prompt and efficient. I don't doubt that Pet Plan is very good too but you need something you can afford. Anny
