I've been wondering this myself ! They are really annoying and quite often they cover up part of my messages - I've tried looking into settings in amazon cos I thought mine were coming from there !

If you close the page down then re-open it in full screen, the add will go down the side. But you are right, they do need to be removed.

I thought it was just my PC .
Agree with you all the ads are a pain.
I'll PM Mark and see if there is anything he can do.

I don't get any drop down ads :? I just see the ones on the right, which I guess fund the site.

Indeed - could someone post me a screenshot of any ads that block messages (together with details of browser and OS used). All the ads should be fairly low-key - there's an ad block on the right hand side and narrow bands of ads interspersed on topics but never should any of these overlay the content of the site itself nor, I would hope, be intrusive/excessive...

I believe it is when someone posts a picture in the thread, the standard dimensions change. The area is so wide it forces the text to become as wide as the photo... This then pushes the text further to the right than normal and the Ads take precedence and overlap the text boxes.

My screen's relatively widescreen and still suffers occasionally.

I can see it in these threads, if you can't replicate it would you like me to take a screenshot?

And you might want to read some of these messages too :D

Edit, sorry I didn't read it properly. As I've said I have a widescreen laptop so someone will suffer more than I but here's a screenshot:

OS - Windows 7

Browser - Chrome

Ah the penny drops - it's not so much that there are dropdown ads or anything - it's that people are linking to huge photos on their postings that cause the content to overrun to the right. I've tried to put some controls in to limit the images on the width which should help but the images are obviously being loaded and displayed from a 3rd party site. Given the size of images that come out of modern megapixel cameras, posters should be aware that posting full-size originals on the web consumes a huge amount of bandwidth for viewers...

Hope this helps,
Mark

Thanks for doing that Mark
But ads appear in my private messages when there is no photo!
I am able to see the message by changing my screen size - I'd rather not do that but hey ho!

A small portion of the screen (160 pixels) on the right shows the ads - the rest should stretch accordingly. Please send a screenshot by email to mark.hayhurst (at) labradoodle.org.uk and I will look into it but this should work for most modern screens (I trust we're not talking iphones here...)

Thanks,
Mark

I was interested to see this thread. This has recently started happening to me too - the column of ads appears approx 3/4 across screen (as viewed left to right) blocking part of the text - if I scroll right I can pick up more text to the right, but the blocked column can't be viewed - Sorry, I have no idea how to send you a screen-shot Mark! I hadn't changed anything on my laptop or desktop, eg screen size etc , so wasn't sure why it was happening. Will be interested to see what happens now. Thanks for looking into it, Mark. :D
