Breeding , is it for you?
Re: Breeding , is it for you?
I forgot to add the 24/7 care that my pups have (I don't work full time) I sleep downstairs with mum and pups until they are 2 weeks old and carefully monitor them with thier progress and weight gain.
Re: Breeding , is it for you?
I have just read on another forum that a litter of Labradoodles has been taken to the vet to be destroyed as the breeder can not sell them as they are now 12 weeks old.
Finding good homes must be the first priority when breeding, unless of course you are prepared to keep any pups you can not sell.

I simply cannot believe that a vet would put down a litter of healthy puppies
Or a breeder would do this to healthy puppies.
It's digusting all round.

Does anybody know if this actually happened? I am stunned. Would a vet do that?

Re: Breeding , is it for you?
The original post has now been updated - the vet did not destroy the pups but took them to a local rescue. Some have already found homes.Fattysplash wrote:Does anybody know if this actually happened? I am stunned. Would a vet do that?
It's good news for the pups....but the "breeder" still disgusts me.

If I lose any pups or any get unwell, I get so deeply upset by it, at the beginning of this year I had a pup with septicaemia, it was really touch and go and he got covered in abscesses which keep bursting, I had to tube feed him and bath him in hibby scrub 4 times a day and keep every thing really sterile, there was only a slim chance he would make, but he did

Re: Breeding , is it for you?
We all know that there are Breeders that care deeply about the puppies they breed and do their utmost to improve on health issues that relate to the breed. They consider the economic situation and refrain from breeding litters when it's obvious that supply is outstripping demand.
Because the Doodle has risen in popularity , prices have risen to reflect this,.. there are people out there that see it as an easy way to make some extra cash and do not consider the long term welfare of the resulting puppies
Anyone browsing "Dogs for sale" can see that there are just too many puppies
What needs to be put across to the public is not to breed their bitches unless they are wiling to take long term responsibility for any pups that do not sell and even for those that do
If you want a Doodle as a pet then do not be tempted to breed even one litter. It is of no benefit at all to the bitch to have....." just one litter"...
You are showing responsibility when you castrate or spay (a) by protecting your bitch from mammary tumors in later life and the risk of Pyometra, and (b) for the males.... testicular cancer

Re: Breeding , is it for you?
yes i think to myself as i siT here AT 5 AM hand nursing a litter of 11 doodles, 10 days old in 4 more hours, with, the trots and a sick mother with no milk ,and a lap and hands stinkiNg of pee and yep poo! IN 85 DEG TEMPS, sleep depravation is setting in a big way, having on average 2 and a half hours SLEEP IF YOU CAN CALL IT THAT ? for the last 11 days , and can only say if your not willing to give up everything for weeks on end, DONT BREED if you cant spend hours and hours studying them thru the night just in case, DONT BREED if your not willing to suffer the BIGGEST heart break some times, when you cant save one no matter how hard you try, DONT BREED
Re: Breeding , is it for you?

What's the problem with your bitch & pups?.....do you have friends that are wiling to help with the feeding , toileting etc.
I'm sure that people will help you if you ask.....I would if I lived close by.
I really pray that your dog and pups will come through

You must be very very tired but s you say if you choose to breed then you have to be prepared to put in the care 24/7
Will be willing your litter well....wish I could be of practical help.......Linny
