I Just thought I'd let you know that Cesar Millan is going on tour around the UK in 2013.

Please do not turn this thread into a big 'I think he's cruel, I don't like him' etc, etc debate -as that is not the purpose of it!!

The tickets go on sale tomorrow. I already have mine, and will be promoting the shows around Brighton next year

His pseudo science is harmful and is not based on any peer reviewed behavioural research considered humane. Promoting his methods is to promote animal abuse. I know behaviourists who have spent a lot of time undoing damage caused by his books and tv show.

Thank you for posting the info about Cesar Millan tour. I have found his books make very interesting reading and many of his training tactics useful. Everyone has a favoured way of training and what works for one person and their dog may not work for another. I think most people use a variety of techniques anyway, praise and reward for correct behaviour etc. (Dunbar, Taylor, Fogle) I think the most important aspect is making sure the dog realises the owner is the alpha leader of the pack and not letting the dog dominate over the owner, so the dog lives in harmony with its human family. Dogs are not people in disguise, they all have their own personality intelligence and trainability will vary with each individual. The canine species is our best animal friend because dogs are so willing to live within a human 'pack' and respond to our commands. This can be only achieved with kindness, respect and encouragement.

I doubt very much Ian Dunbar would agree with the 'dominanace/alpha' being a necessity in dog training.

PS - agree that Cesar Milan's training can be cruel and his lack of understanding of the dog's brain is appaling

He is cruel, full stop. He should be stopped, full stop. Shock collars? they have NO place in dog training. All charities training dogs to be service dogs do the entire thing by reward.

Sure, you can say 'No!' and put the dog in another room, and ignore them.

But not Cesar Milan's way.

It's even worse when a terrible trainer such as CM is imitated by stupid people, it becomes an industrialisation of animal abuseon an epic scale which only gets worse. I saw CM on the AT show today and I can only say that he came across very badly. Unable to articulate intelligent responses to the questions that AT (bless him) put to him (they could have gone a safer route but clearly someone on the production team is a dog lover). I have a feeling that CM's days are numbered but the pressure needs to remain constant.

Yesterday, I pretended to hit Paddy (i.e. I waved my hand close to his face); he didn;t flinch which just goes to show Paddy has never had to flinch because all he knows is that good things happen when he's good and nothing happens when he hasn't responded as hoped. I am a first time dog owner and positive reinforcement has worked 100%for us.

Mini rant over Actually it isn't! We have a CM dog whisperer in Henley and I have seen owners kick/shock etc their dogs to no avail. I'm always being asked why I have such a good dog but people seem unresponsive to my answer - be kind

getting myself worked up now so going to cuddle with the padster.

I saw that too, and told my hubby as soon as I got in from work "CM had a much better time with EH this morning, even got to plug his tour........" Hubby just tutted and shook his head in disgust.

Hmm its very much the same in childcare though. Varying methods of child rearing cause awful upset and arguments within my role as a nanny (and a mother). I like order and discipline and my values may differ from other peoples.

I use Gina Fords methods to child rearing, strict routine and boundaries - the baby fits in around your lifestyle. The baby is new and you can train it to suit you, for example sleep and feeding routines. I adapt her methods to suit the family I am working for. Many people think its a cruel approach but I am meeting the babies needs. Training a baby so the parents can sleep will be more beneficial for the baby (and the parents relationship) On the other hand my sister is very much at the other end of the spectrum - you fit in around the baby, baby leads you, baby led weening etc etc. She gave birth to her 2nd child 2 weeks ago and is exhausted, I suggested the GF approach but she doesn't want to - thats fine. There is no right or wrong way as long as the child's needs are met. We both want the same outcome - a healthy balanced child. I exercise the agency to use what methods I think work for the baby i'm looking after. I dont agree with leaving the baby swaddled in the pram outside in the fresh air in the middle of December - so I dont do it.

I think its the same with CM, Ive seen his TV shows and I like his rules and boundaries. By showing my 5 year old some of them it demonstrates to him how HE should behave. Bella is only a puppy and will use her mouth a lot. We socialise her with other puppies and she shows restraint which is fantastic. Obviously I don't agree with kicking/ strangling/shocking or any other physical/mental violence towards Bella.

I do understand some peoples passion on this subject but I feel that being a public figure - surely he would have been arrested for animal cutely by now ...

.... PS the show is around my birthday so I might go to the Bristol one !
